One Bus Away – the popular real-time transit app used by more than 100,000 Puget Sound riders each week – is going through some changes behind the scenes. After creating the app and managing it for several years, the University of Washington is handing off hosting and maintenance of the app to Sound Transit this summer.
The app, first created by UW grad students, has taken off in popularity around the country. The creators – Brian Ferris and Kari Watkins –have since moved onto jobs with Google and Georgia Tech, while UW staff have kept the app running. During the past year and a half, Metro and Sound Transit have worked cooperatively with the UW to finance and keep the data streams running for the app. This transit agency partnership will continue, with Metro continuing to provide the real-time bus arrival and schedule data that feeds the app.
We want riders to have the best information possible to plan their daily routines and trips and look forward to continuing to work with Sound Transit to serve our customers. Check out our rider tools and apps page for more information.
